Chapter 15

“I hate to disappoint you, but I will not be staying,” Culfang said to the fallen elf that faced him. “I will free you, Lorranu,” he said without taking his eyes from Lorranu’s captor.

“Oh? I think we have you surrounded. Even if you made it outside the keep, there is nowhere you can go that we can’t find you.”

“I will be back; I promise.” He said this for the benefit of them both. He pulled a small object out of his pocket and squeezed it before he disappeared.

When he reappeared, he placed the small silver figurine of a dragon back in his pocket.

“You know that was a onetime use, don’t you,” said the gold dragon from atop his pile of precious metals.

“So you told me before I left. But I think you may be kind enough to an old friend to make it useful again.”

“Perhaps, but for now, I would like to hear what you’ve found out.”

“I would like to retrieve Lorranu first, if you will help me.”

“I will if I can.”

“Recharge this figurine and I will need one more as well, for Lorranu.”

“And what is your plan?”

“I plan on freeing him from the dungeon where I found him.”

“Yes, of course.” He did as the elf asked. Lorranu was his friend as well, and he didn’t want to see him in the hands of Tia’roth any more than Culfang did.

Since Culfang hadn’t seen into Lorranu’s cell he would have to appear outside his cell and hand him the figurine through the bars in the small window. He didn’t know if he had let enough time passed, but he didn’t want to wait any longer. When he teleported into the dungeon it was as he found it when he was first there, empty.

He put his face against the bars of Lorranu’s cell. “Lorranu,” he whispered loudly. His face floated out of the dark as it had earlier. “I told you I would be back,” he said softly.

“You should not have come,” Lorranu echoed his words from their last encounter.

“Take this.” He handed him the figurine. “Use it to teleport out of here.” Lorranu vanished without a word. He heard footfalls on the stairs behind him, and he too vanished.

He was standing before the dragon, but he was alone. Lorranu was not there. It hadn’t occurred to him that Lorranu wouldn’t leave without his home in the clouds. He just hoped Tia’roth hadn’t managed to find a way to get to it. It would take a day, if not two, for him to reach them, but only if he was alone on his cloud.

“Where is he, were you not able to free him?” The dragon didn’t sound happy that Culfang was alone.

“I did free him. I watched him disappear before I left there myself. Since he is not here I can only conclude that he went to his home.”

“I guess he would. Well, there’s nothing else we can do so tell me what you’ve learned.

Culfang told him the information he had acquired and the dragon was respectfully silent until he was finished.
